New Policy Says Cremated Remains Can Be Scattered on District Parklands

Those who wish to scatter the remains of loved ones must obtain a permit and follow guidelines set by the policy.

The Livermore Area Recreation and Park District Board of Directors recently approved a new policy to allow the scattering of cremated remains of pets and humans on parklands.

“California state law regulates cremation and disposition (including scattering), allowing it in areas of the state where no local prohibition exists, and with permission of the property owner,” according to a statement from the district following the September 30 meeting.

Under the new policy, those who apply for a permit may scatter legally cremated human or animal remains on parklands under certain circumstances, and while following guidelines to be established by the district.

“While the location of scattered ashes will be reported to the Parks and Facilities Manager on the permit form, the District is not responsible for maintaining records of permits, names of the deceased or locations ofremains. And as LARPD parks are for all visitors, there will be no restrictions to future use of or access to parkland where remains have been scattered.”

According to a staff report from the meeting, Livermore Area Recreation and Park District staff members believe scattering activity has most likely occurred on parklands in the past, and the new policy would eventually offer families guidelines for scattering remains.
