Long Beach Sales Tax Rises To 11 Percent: What To Know (patch.com) โ Long Beach shoppers are now paying an 11 percent sales tax after a new countywide Measure ER increase took effect, with another Long Beach-specific bump scheduled for 2027. Residents will fund health and human services while a lawsuit keeps the new revenue in escrow, meaning the city's rate could climb to 11.25 percent if the tax survives in court.

2. Arrest Made In Killing Of Long Beach Man Found Dead With Suspicious Injuries (patch.com) โ Long Beach police arrested 30-year-old Unrico Sims on suspicion of murdering resident Kenneth Shannon, whose body was found with suspicious injuries in early September. Detectives now say Shannon died in a nearby shooting the night before, and the case has been sent to prosecutors while investigators continue seeking tips from the community.

3. A Westside cafe features local students' art, sells its famous salsas and is determined to build community (lbpost.com) โ A new Candlestick Ravine Cafe has opened across from Cabrillo High School on Long Beach's Westside, giving students and neighbors a much-needed spot for coffee, breakfast, and community. The owners are partnering with the school on student jobs and art displays, while continuing their popular salsa and catering business that grew out of local farmers markets and family recipes.

4. A prolonged heat wave is hitting Long Beach. It will feel even hotter because of El Niรฑo (lbpost.com) โ Long Beach is bracing for a weeklong heat wave with highs in the 90s, muggy nights in the 70s, and an extreme heat watch through Thursday. Residents can cool off at city libraries, cooling centers, aquatic playgrounds at Alamitos and Bay Shore beaches, and public pools at Martin Luther King Jr. and Silverado parks, with free admission for kids.

5. Long Beach's speed safety devices are nearly installed, warning period to begin this month (presstelegram.com) โ Long Beach is about to switch on automated speed cameras at 18 locations citywide, with a 60-day warning period starting next week before real tickets begin. If you drive 11 mph or more over the limit, you'll first get a mailed warning, then fines that scale with your speed, with income-based reductions available. The city says no driver faces will be photographed and citation data won't go to police.
