Today's riddle: The more you take, the more you leave behind. What am I ? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Yolanda Hernandez killed in pedestrian crash on Baltic Avenue (newsline.com) — A woman identified as Yolanda Hernandez died after a white pickup truck hit her while she was walking at Baltic Avenue and Burnett Street in Long Beach on September 25, and the driver fled the scene. Police are still seeking the hit‑and‑run driver, while legal experts urge families in similar cases to push for thorough investigations into road conditions, lighting, and other contributing factors.
2. LBCC wants to teach its students to help heal trauma. Its new program is already in demand (lbpost.com) — Long Beach City College has launched a fast-growing trauma studies program, now offering one of the country's first undergraduate degrees in the field and training faculty and staff to better support vulnerable students. Enrollment has more than doubled in three semesters, and the college is drawing students from across the country while building a campus-wide, trauma‑informed approach to teaching and community.
3. Beach Hazards Statement issued October 4 at 7:33PM PDT until October 8 at 8:00PM PDT by NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard CA (keyt.com) — Long Beach beaches face dangerous rip currents, 3–6 foot surf, and unusually high tides from Tuesday through Thursday, with the city singled out as one of the most susceptible spots. Expect a higher risk of ocean drowning, possible flooding of parking lots and paths, and potential upgrades to coastal flood or high surf advisories—so plan to stay out of the water or near lifeguards.
4. First-Ever Nesting Olive Ridley Sea Turtles in California (noaa.gov) — Long Beach scientists and Aquarium of the Pacific staff are now caring for the first sea turtle eggs ever laid on the U.S. West Coast, moved from nests in nearby Seal and Huntington beaches. Local partners, including Cal State Long Beach, are monitoring for more nesting, while residents are urged to report turtle sightings and avoid disturbing fenced nest areas.
5. California and Arizona Enter a Wider US Heat-Travel Shift as Scorching Temperatures Challenge Travellers (travelandtourworld.com) — Long Beach is under an extreme heat warning this week, with coastal temperatures around 90°F and warm nights that limit cooling relief. Residents and visitors are urged to shift outdoor plans to mornings or evenings, use air-conditioned spaces during peak heat, stay hydrated, and be aware that heavy electricity demand could strain the grid even though widespread outages aren't currently expected.
