Uptick in Los Angeles mosquitoes raises concerns about West Nile virus (dailytrojan.com) — Health experts warn that Los Angeles is seeing its highest West Nile virus case numbers in nearly a decade, driven by warm, humid weather and abundant standing water. County and USC officials urge residents to wear repellent, check window screens, and eliminate even small pools of water to cut mosquito breeding and reduce infection risk.

Social media captures Southern California squirrels "splooting" in midst of sweltering heat wave (cbsnews.com) — As the latest Southern California heat wave drags on, Angelenos are spotting squirrels "splooting"—lying flat with legs splayed—to cool off in parks and yards. Local wildlife experts say it's normal heat-beating behavior and urge residents not to feed or water wild animals, but instead give them space and shade so they can cope naturally.

Simon Rodia spent 33 years building 17 towers in his Los Angeles yard from bottles, tiles and seashells; the finished towers are now a national landmark (parade.com) — Los Angeles' Watts Towers, built over three decades by Simon Rodia from scrap materials in his Watts yard, survived a demolition attempt and are now a protected landmark. Guided tours run Thursday through Saturday, and a broader campus renovation is underway, giving locals more reasons to rediscover this iconic folk-art site.
