High School Bomb Threats In Orange County

Orange County Sheriff's Department is investigating numerous bomb threats at several local high schools on Friday the 13th, officials say.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA — A lockdown at Huntington Beach High School, prompted by a telephoned threat, has been lifted, according to Huntington Beach Police information officer Angela Bennett. Some officers will remain at the scene today as a precaution, however, she said. Students were kept in their classrooms until the campus was determined to be safe. This was one of several threats received by high schools across the county Friday morning.

"At approximately 8 a.m. the school receptionist received a call from an unknown man that there were explosives hidden throughout the Huntington Beach High School campus," Bennett told Patch. A school lockdown was immediately initiated.

"We arrived at the high school and checked interior and exterior, and located nothing," she said. The lockdown was lifted by 9:30 a.m. and classes resumed, as normal at the high school.

This was just one of several similar threats made across Orange County on Friday, officials have told Patch, some with phone calls, others sent via email.

Carole Thomas, an assistant to the superintendent for the Huntington Beach Union High School District, confirmed that other school districts in the county got similar calls on Friday morning and officials suspect it may have something to do with the superstition surrounding Friday the 13th.
