Hopkinson Hero; Elementary School Makes The Grade
Hopkinson Elementary School scores tops in math and English. The latest from your school, and their heroes from the November board meeting.

LOS ALAMITOS, CA — Los Alamitos district campus among top schools in state English, math results. Students at Hopkinson Elementary ranked second in Orange County in the latest round of state tests in math and sixth in English language arts, Principal Evelyn Garcia told a meeting of the of the Los Alamitos Unified School District board.
Slightly more than 90 percent of students in grades 3-5 met or exceeded state mathematics standards The largest gains came in 5th grade where test scores improved by 10 percentage points to 93 percent meeting or exceeding standards.
In language arts, 86 percent of students achieved at the highest levels. The greatest improvement again appeared in 5 th grade with a 15-point jump in scores to 95 percent meeting or exceeding standards.
In presenting her annual progress report to the board, Garcia said that that “data is important. It matters because we use it to drive instruction and ensure that we are providing our Huskies with what they need. Our students are being prepared to think critically and problem solve and this is one measure where the work of
our teachers, families, and our Huskies shows.”

Garcia said the school has begun using practice tests specially designed to closely simulate the state tests.
“This allows us to target instruction and offer our kids a preview of what is to come. I am confident that our Huskies will reach 100 percent,” Garcia said.

At the board meeting, Garcia also honored Trista Guetig, a Hopkinson parent, as the school’s 2017 Hero of the Heart for her six years of volunteer work on behalf of students. “She represents the spirit of Hopkinson,” Garcia said. “Trista is committed, consistent, kind. She works tirelessly to provide extraordinary experiences, not only for her two but for all of our Huskies.” Guetig was joined in the award presentation by her husband Kevin and children Lila and Claire, both Hopkinson students.
“There are so many people who do so much at Hopkinson,” Guetig said in accepting the award. “We have great teachers and Evelyn [Garcia] always so open and willing to talk to us crazy parents who come in and have crazy ideas. Hopkinson is a wonderful place, and it’s easy to volunteer. I am honored.”
