Malibu Voters Defeat Measure W

Residents handily defeated a proposal to allow a 38,000-foot commercial center at the corner of Cross Creek and Civic Center Way.

Malibu residents defeated a development plan to allow for a 38,000-square-foot grocery and retail center at the northwest corner of Cross Creek and Civic Center Way.

With all five precincts counted, Measure W was handily defeated. At the end of the night, 57 percent of Malibu voters went against the project. The finally tally was 1,575 against the project and 1,173 voters in favor of it.

The measure’s opponents argued that the traffic study for the project is outdated and likely to exacerbate traffic in the community. They questioned whether the project would add anything to the community.

However, proponents argued that the project would serve locals, sparing them trips outside the city to shop for groceries.

“The Plan was designed by a LOCAL architect with input from educators, parents, and special needs advocates. The result? The Plan benefits LOCAL RESIDENTS - not people visiting Malibu,” Measure W supporters wrote.
