MALIBU, CA — Malibu residents will gather on Saturday in front of the Point Dume Post Office to protest in support of the United States Post Office, which has come under recent scrutiny at the election approaches and record numbers of Americans will cast their votes by mail.

The protest will start at 11 a.m. in front the Pt. Dume Post Office at the intersection of PCH and Heathercliff Road. Similar protests will take place in Thousand Oaks, Santa Monica, Hollywood, North Hollywood, Valley Village, and more.

Participants are urged to wear masks, bring hand sanitizer and keep their physical distance from others. Patch has reached out to event organizers for further comment.

Nationwide reports of Post Office cutbacks, locked dropboxes, and slowed delivery times have become a front page topic, especially with mail-in ballots expected to play a sizeable role in the 2020 election due to the coronavirus pandemic. On Tuesday, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy promised to pause certain changes until after the November election.

However, concerns remain that the post office is underfunded and ill-equipped to handle the barrage of mail.

Malibu resident Cher made headlines Wednesday when she asked repeatedly on Twitter whether she could volunteer for the post office. She eventually called two offices in Malibu, who told her that while they don’t accept volunteers, they are always looking to hire.

Perhaps her next step will be attend Saturday’s rally.
