📰 News we're reading

• Los Angeles vote to remove Anti-Camping Zones highlights divide over homelessness policy — The Malibu Times (malibutimes.com) — Malibu's homelessness strategy is being shaped by wildfire risk, even as Los Angeles rolls back anti-camping zones in several neighborhoods. Local officials are pairing encampment enforcement with outreach and services, citing dozens of encampment-related fires and recent major wildfires. The story contrasts Malibu's fire-driven emergency approach with LA's shift toward reduced enforcement, highlighting what's at stake for canyon and hillside neighborhoods.

• Heat advisory affecting Southern California from Sunday to Tuesday (fresnobee.com) — A National Weather Service heat advisory will hit the Malibu Coast from Sunday morning through Tuesday morning, with temperatures up to 94 degrees and elevated risk of heat illness. Residents are urged to limit strenuous outdoor activity, take frequent shaded or indoor breaks, and call 911 if someone shows signs of heat-related distress. The alert also covers nearby coastal and island areas.

• Wildfires in Coastal Watersheds Linked to Water Quality at Beaches (noozhawk.com) — New research links post-wildfire runoff in coastal watersheds to spikes in harmful fecal bacteria at beaches, with Malibu Lagoon State Beach and Point Dume among the most affected sites statewide. Using 20 years of data, scientists found urbanized watersheds see stronger contamination after fires, raising concerns for swimmers following storms. The findings could guide future beach closures and watershed planning in Malibu.
