Caretaker Sentenced to 7 Years For Assaulting Elderly Millbrae Man

The victim, an 88-year-old man, suffered a stroke and died several weeks after the December 2011 assault.

A caretaker who admitted to assaulting an elderly Millbrae man inΒ his care was sentencedΒ FridayΒ to seven years in state prison, according toΒ San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

Jalome Sukulu Balekaba, 50, was sentencedΒ FridayΒ after pleading noΒ contest on Oct. 1, 2013 to charges including assault with a deadly weapon,Β felony assault and felony physical elder abuse, Wagstaffe said.

He was arrested on Dec. 19, 2011, after the 88-year-old man he wasΒ looking after was found bleeding heavily from a head wound while BalekabaΒ slept in the next room, according to prosecutors.

Police had responded to the residence for a welfare check afterΒ the victim's nephew called to report that Balekaba sounded drunk over theΒ phone.

The victim was taken to the hospital, where he became comatose andΒ was treated for a stroke. He died about 10 weeks later.

Investigators determined that the victim had been struck with hisΒ own walker, according to prosecutors.
