Driver Rescued After Crashing 300 Feet Into Marin Ravine

WATCH: A man was airlifted to a hospital after crashing his car down an embankment and into a ravine in unincorporated Marin County.

BOLINAS, CA – A man was airlifted to a hospital after crashing his car 300 feet down an embankment and into a ravine Tuesday near Alpine Dam in unincorporated Marin County.

The crash happened around 3:45 p.m. when the man careened his vehicle off Fairfax-Bolinas Road and down a ravine, according to the California Highway Patrol. A motorist who was also traveling in the area called 911.

Firefighters extricated the victim from the vehicle after an hour of work and the CHP's H-30 helicopter transported him to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. The 50-year-old suffered injuries that are considered major but not life-threatening, CHP officials said.

"If the alert citizen had not observed this vehicle exit the rural road his location would have been difficult to find," officials said. "His vehicle blended in with the trees and shrubs."

The cause of the crash remained under investigation.
