📰 News we're reading

1. Sea levels are rising. This marsh could save Marin from drowning (sfstandard.com) — Flooding around Bothin Marsh and Tam Junction is already costing Mill Valley businesses thousands of dollars and regularly cutting off bike and pedestrian access. Marin agencies are advancing a major plan to raise and reroute the marsh trail, bolster natural defenses, and buy time against rapidly rising sea levels that could soon make local roads and shops far more vulnerable.

2. Field hockey: Tonderys scores winner as Redwood, Tam resume rivalry (marinij.com) — A tightly fought MCAL field hockey showdown at Tamalpais High in Mill Valley saw Redwood edge Tam 2-1 on Tuesday, with a late winning goal from first-year varsity player Eloise Tonderys. The rivalry match, played in hot, smoky conditions, featured standout goalkeeping and plenty of drama as Tam missed a last-second chance to equalize.

3. Best Bets: San Jose Book Festival, Bay Area Theatre Week, 'Simon Boccanegra,' Christian McBride, Chanticleer (localnewsmatters.org) — Bay Area Theatre Week is bringing discounted tickets to dozens of productions, including Marin Theatre's comedy-drama "The White Chip" running in Mill Valley through Sept. 20. Alongside that local option, the roundup spotlights free literary events, San Francisco Opera's season opener, SFJAZZ concerts, and a new Chanticleer production, giving Mill Valley arts lovers plenty of choices across the region.

4. Fall Film Preview: Flicks you can't miss, from starry fests to hot local docs (48hills.org) — Mill Valley residents can look forward to the Mill Valley Film Festival from Oct. 1–11, likely showcasing major awards contenders before they hit theaters. The broader fall film season also brings Bay Area-focused releases, new work from major international directors, and several San Francisco festivals and retrospectives, offering plenty of options for serious moviegoers close to home.

5. 10-year-old San Francisco girl enters the Oscar race for best actress (fresnobee.com) — Mill Valley film fans will get an early look at the acclaimed San Francisco-set drama "Josephine" during this year's Mill Valley Film Festival, ahead of its November release. The film stars 10-year-old Mason Reeves, already generating Oscar buzz for her performance as a young girl who witnesses a violent assault in Golden Gate Park, with Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan in key supporting roles.
