Proposed Vista Point Bike Trail Would Connect Golden Gate, Sausalito

Officials say the proposed trail would allow bicyclists to avoid busy roadways between the Golden Gate Bridge, Fort Baker and Sausalito.

A public hearing will be held Tuesday on a multi-use, car-free trail that will more safely get bicyclists from the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge to Fort Baker and Sausalito.

The 15-foot wide and 1,700-foot long Vista Point Trail will take cyclists from Dana Bowers Vista Point at the north end of the Bridge to Fort Baker's network of trails and roads, Golden Gate National Recreation Area spokeswoman Alexander Picavet said.

The trail also will allow cyclists to avoid busy Alexander Avenue - a narrow, two-lane feeder route between state Route 1, the Golden Gate Bridge and Sausalito - until they are nearly in Sausalito, Picavet said.

The proposed Vista Road, the proposed trail route, curves to Lower Conzelman Road in Fort Baker, passes under the Bridge and affords dramatic views of San Francisco, the Bay and the Bridge.

The Marin County Bicycle Coalition says thousands of bicyclists and pedestrians travel each day to Fort Baker where there are quiet bike lanes and sidewalks, restaurants, waterfronts and beautiful views.

The Vista Point Trail will make busy Alexander Road safer for vehicles as well, Picavet said.

Construction on the $2.3 million Vista Point Trail is scheduled to start in the summer of 2017, Picavet said.

The public information hearing is 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Sausalito City Hall, 420 Litho St.
