Fire Along Highway 101 In San Jose May Have Been Man-Caused

Smoke obscured the roadway, which had to be closed for a time.

SAN JOSE, CA - A grass fire along U.S. Highway 101 in East San Jose on Wednesday may have been caused by a discarded cigarette, according to reports.

The fire was reported around 4:11 p.m. on the right shoulder, near the McKee Road off-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Heavy smoke caused the closure of the road, for a short time, as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames. They quickly snuffed out the fire and had the road reopened but the impact of the closure was felt deep into rush hour.
