A new and unique community exercise club has formed in the CVTC community, modeled after the Sunland-Tujunga Belly Buster Club organized by Richard Stewart of the Sunland-Tujunga Neighborhood Council.

If you missed the CVTC meeting in February, you missed Richard explain about this club. Here is what he said:

“It started as a joke years ago.  I just knew I was going to have the newest successful “pet rock” idea and become a billionaire.

“I bottled up some pinto beans and labeled the bottle “Belly Busters.”  The back of the bottle said, “For a firmer and leaner looking stomach.  Directions: Remove cap. Empty contents on the floor. Pick up beans. Repeat often until desired results are obtained.”

“Brilliant as my “Belly Busters” idea was, no one bought a single bottle.

“However, an offshoot of this zany idea has spontaneously developed from a recent walk around the block with my wife, Susan Stewart.  We have come up with a “Belly Buster” idea that we can already testify works like magic!”

Here’s how it works and how YOU can participate.

Step 1.  Join the CVTC Belly Buster Club.

Step 2.  Adopt a street that is about a mile long (or just your own block).

Step 3.  Put 3 to 4 plastic grocery bags in your pocket, along with some gloves.

Step 4.  Go for a walk with your spouse, friend or neighbor.

Step 5.  Put on your gloves and pick up litter and trash on the street and deposit it in your plastic bags.

Here is the exciting part!  There are many methods of exercise while picking up the litter:

Simply bend at the waist, stretch and pick.  This works well on the abs.

Or you can alternate between deep knee bends and thrusts to trim the legs.

But the simplicity and beauty of this “game” is that simply bending over and picking up the trash while walking, provides a wonderful workout.

Step 6.  Deposit your full plastic bags in the nearest trash container.

Step 7.  The fun part: When you finish your roughly one mile walk, turn around, and take a “Victory Walk” back home and admire the now clean street, gutters and sidewalks that you have created!

Step 8.  Repeat 3 to 4 times a week.

With this program you are doing the ultimate multi-tasking!  You have taken a walk, which alone is healthy and extroverting. You have spent time with your spouse or friend.  You have exercised.  You have cleaned up your neighborhood. And if you are really talented, you can even walk your dog at the same time!

Alas, the only drawback is that there are only a limited number of streets in our community. A few streets have already been adopted, and I am sure the other streets will be scooped up quickly.  To claim your street and join the CVTC Belly Busters Club, contact me at Marti@theCVcouncil.  We can announce your name and the street adoptions in future issues.

Let the Belly Busting begin!
