FREE Bicycle Safety Class Friday 9/27 (9am-12pm)

FREE Bike Safety Class Friday AM! All participants will receive a free helmet, front and back bicycle lights, and more!

Course
Tought by local League-Certified Cycling Instructors (LCI) and one assistant, the course will incorporate elements of the Smart Cycling: Traffic Skills 101 curriculum established by the League of American Bicyclists. The courses are structured as follows:

  • 1-hour of In-Class Instruction -  Rules of the Road incorporating the California Vehicle Code, basic bicycle safety, bikeway classification, reading maps and planning safe routes of travel. Participants will receive materials relevant to the topics discussed in the course, including helmets, lights, and Smart Cycling manuals. Each participant must be at least 18 years old and shall sign a waiver prior to taking the class.
  • 1-hour of Parking Lot Skills - Participants shall be instructed in bicycle safety inspections, fixing a flat, safe road cycling and crash avoidance techniques. Each participant must bring a bicycle in order to participate.
  • 1-hour On-Street Bike Ride - The third portion of the class shall take place on the streets where cyclists are led on a predetermined route and bike ride to practice safe road cycling in real conditions. The bike ride shall take place on quiet residential streets, minor arterials, and/or multi-lane low- and moderate-speed arterials with posted speed limits no greater than 35 mph. 
  • Instructors shall distribute a post-class survey/questionnaire to each participant of the class.
Goals
  1. Teach safe road cycling, both in principal and in practice.
  2. Encourage use of helmets and lights to create safe road cycling culture.
  3. Reinforce topics covered in class by distributing instructive materials (Smart Cycling manuals).
  4. Inspire more local bicycle trips
