The Attacking Ocean: The Past, Present and Future of Rising Sea Levels

Archaeologist and historian Brian Fagan takes us on a fascinating, lavishly illustrated journey through history that tells the story of how humans have faced the challenges of rising sea levels over the past 10,000 years.

This is a story of vanishing landscapes and extreme weather events, of storm surges and cyclones. What are the lessons for today's warming world? Do we wall off the ocean, adjust to it by moving to higher ground, or simply pay for the damage as it occurs? And how do we cope with the impending, and inevitable, crisis of environmental refugees that will affect every nation on earth? Above all, does history tell us that we can master the ocean?

Archaeologist Brian Fagan was born in England, was educated at Cambridge University BA, MA, and PhD, and worked in Central Africa before coming to the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1967. He is now Emeritus Professor of Anthropology and an independent scholar.

Brian is the author of numerous general books on archaeology, ancient climate change, and most recently histories of water and ancient seafaring. He is regarded as one of the world's leading archaeological writers and lectures about archaeology, water, and ancient climate all over the world.
