Mailbox Magic

I remember as a kid, having a pen pal. The excitement of getting a letter from Kenya was one of the highlights of my youth! The exotic stamps, the tantalizing promise of words written expressly for me, the mystique of the 10,000 mile journey...this piece of mail was magical and the fact that it landed in my mailbox was epic.

Now, I know I'm only soon to be 30 years old, but the leaps in communication in my lifetime have been enormous and very exciting. As I watched the computers in our house get smaller, faster and more powerful, I got caught up the lure of immediate gratification along with everyone else. Colorful stamps? The feel of an aerogram in my hand? Pshaw! I have texting and Instagram!

But...the pendulum swings. Just as I've ascertained that I prefer the feel of a real book in my hands rather than one on my Kindle, I also find that I get much greater satisfaction in both sending and receiving a real piece of good old-fashioned mail over a "like" on a Facebook post. Real stamps and a handwritten address...now we'e talking!

The effort of choosing a card, actually knowing the physical mailing address, going to buy a stamp... it shows such a great level of thoughtfulness and care that really translates above and beyond a quick smiley face icon and a luv ya!

The world seems to get smaller and faster all the time. As friends and family scatter across the globe, or even just across town, it gets harder all the time to even get together for a coffee. But for the same price, you can reconnect and send a little bit of that old mailbox magic and put a smile on someone's face.
