Murrieta Completes Streetlight Retrofit, Saving Estimated $6.5M

Retrofitting the lights will result in a savings of $6.5 million over 20 years to the City, county officials say.

The City of Murrieta: The City of Murrieta is the first city in Western Riverside County to complete the conversion of their streetlights to LED technologies as part of a regional program to purchase and retrofit approximately 55,000 streetlights. Retrofitting the lights will result in a savings of $6.5 million over 20 years to the City.

Through participation in the Western Riverside Council of Governments’ (WRCOG) Regional Streetlight Program, the City of Murrieta purchased approximately 6,500 utility-owned streetlights. The City selected new energy efficient LED fixtures and began streetlight conversion in February 2019. Six months later, the streetlight conversion is complete, and the City will capture the full annual savings from lower energy consumption and utility costs. In addition to energy and cost savings, the streetlight retrofit will also enhance public safety, improve the appearance nighttime sky, and create opportunities for smart city and revenue generating initiatives. “The financial benefits of the retrofit program are significant to the City, and the improved visibility and public safety enhancements just make it an even better decision for us to do this.” Said Kelly Seyarto, Murrieta’s Mayor.

The City of Murrieta is the first of eleven jurisdictions to complete their LED streetlight retrofit. Across all participating jurisdictions, the WRCOG Regional Streetlight Program will retrofit 55,000 streetlights, resulting in savings of $70 million over 20 years, which is enough energy to power 2,500 homes each year.
