Nationwide Emergency Alert Test to Occur Today

There will be some differences in what viewers will see and hear, as opposed to emergency alerts they are accustomed to.

The first nationwide Emergency Alert System test will take place at 11 a.m. Pacific Time, 2 p.m. Eastern Time today.

It may look like regular, local EAS tests that most people are already familiar with, but there will be some differences in what viewers will see and hear, said Daniel Wilson, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for the Murrieta Fire Department.

The test will appear on all participating radio, television, cable and satellite providers. The audio message will repeat “this is a test.” The video message scroll may not indicate “this is a test," Wilson advised.

The message will last for approximately three minutes and then regular programming will resume.

The 2 p.m. Eastern Time was selected to make sure the test can occur during normal business hours across many time zones.
