Clayton Fire Update: Crews Begin Mop-Up Of Lower Lake As Containment Hit 55%

Day 6: Destroyed are 175 homes and roughly 100 additional structures in the Lake County region.

LAKE COUNTY, CA – Firefighters at the 4,000-acre Clayton Fire, burning since Saturday in Lake County, began the mop-up and securing of the fire's perimeter.

The blaze, began from a suspected arsonist, has consumed 3,929 acres as of today, with containment at 55 percent, according to Cal Fire.

The agency's damage-inspection teams are surveying the area to determine how many structures are damaged or destroyed, officials said. The latest figures show the fire has destroyed 268 structures with 316 threatened,

As surveys are completed, the number of structures damaged or destroyed may rise.

The cause of the Clayton blaze now is officially listed as "arson," as a Clearlake man was arrested Monday for suspicion of arson for the fire and other blazes in the area.

Current data indicates the fire has destroyed 268 structures, including 175 single-family homes, eight commercial structures and 85 other structures, such as sheds and smaller outbuildings, Cal Fire said.

The Clayton Fire broke out Saturday evening near Highway 29 and Clayton Creek, south of Lower Lake.
