Coroner Identifies Person Who Died When Car Flipped as Newark Teen
The collision occurred just before 9 p.m. Monday night on Palomares Road.

The Alameda County coroner has identified a man who died in a crash Monday night in unincorporated Alameda County, a coroner’s bureau official said. Nineteen-year-old, Newark resident Karan Lomesh died in a crash when a 1994 Mazda pickup truck driven by another 19-year-old Newark resident went off the road and overturned, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The first call of the crash on Palomares Road about two to three miles north of Niles Canyon Road came in just before 9 p.m., CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said. The Mazda was traveling south on Palomares Road at about 50 mph when the driver could not negotiate a curve and the truck left the roadway, according to the CHP. CHP officials said the truck came to rest on its roof at the bottom of a gully 30 feet from the road.

The crash ejected two people who were in the bed of the truck. One of those was Lomesh, CHP officials said. The driver declined medical treatment at the crash site while emergency personnel took two others, 15- and 16-year-old males, to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley for treatment. One had minor injuries and the other had moderate injuries, according to the CHP.
The CHP does not suspect that alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash. CHP officials closed Palomares Road until 1:05 a.m. this morning. The crash is under investigation.
