Driver Fleeing Newport Police Causes Head-On Crash

A man, allegedly trying to outrun the police, crossed a center divider on PCH, and slammed into an oncoming car.

Newport Beach police pursued a suspicious vehicle into Huntington Beach, where it crossed the center divider and crashed into an oncoming car, police said today.

The pursuit began in the 7000 block of West Pacific Coast Highway about 11 p.m. Sunday, said Newport Beach police Sgt. John Thulin. An officer pulled over the Chevrolet sedan for vehicle code violations, but the driver took off when the officer approached the car.

The officer chased the sedan westbound on PCH into Huntington Beach, where the driver went over a center median and hit an oncoming vehicle around two minutes after the pursuit began, Thulin said.

The driver complained of pain and was transported to a hospital to be checked out before he could be booked on suspicion of evading officers, the sergeant said, adding that another man and two women in the car were detained.

Police were not certain why the driver fled from the officer since the car was not reported stolen, Thulin said.
