Man Attacks Elderly Man With Pool Cue Before Fleeing Police, Authorities Say

A 58-year-old man was arrested when he struck a senior with a pool cue in Costa Mesa, police said.

COSTA MESA, CA — A 58-year-old man was arrested in Costa Mesa when he assaulted an elderly man with a pool cue, police said Thursday.

The incident was captured on surveillance video and police body camera footage, which showed a 58-year-old suspect standing near a pool table approaching a described senior victim before striking him with a pool cue.

Police said the victim was injured with a head laceration.

The suspect then jumped on a bike and left the scene, according to police.

The incident was reported and officers searched the area, soon finding a potential suspect on River Trail at Victoria Street, police said.

"A sergeant and officer positioned themselves on the River Trail to intercept the suspect and upon seeing the officers, the man ditched his bike and attempted to flee," police said in a statement. "Not possible."

"The sergeant caught up to the suspect and took him into custody for assault with a deadly weapon, causing injury to a senior adult, obstruction, vandalism, and an active warrant for drug possession," police said.

The suspect's name or identity was not released.
