Fundraising Underway For Dog With Heart Defect At Marin Humane
Without surgery, Evita will likely die within months, according to experts at Marin Humane.

NOVATO, CA – Evita is a special dog who needs a special surgery. The 8-year-old dog has a heart defect, and without surgery, she will likely die within months, according to experts at Marin Humane.
The Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso mix was surrendered to Marin Humane in April after her family said they had no time for her, said Lisa Bloch, spokeswoman for the Novato-based nonprofit. Not long after, veterinarians discovered she had a rare congenital heart condition.
The condition is called Patent Ductus Arteriosus. In dogs who suffer from PDA, blood is diverted in abnormal patterns in the heart, causing blood to flow from the aorta into the pulmonary artery, and then to the lungs, Bloch explained.

"Her surgery must be performed by a cardiologist but they will be able to do it through her femoral artery – like they often do with human heart procedures – which will be less invasive," Bloch said.
"Her recovery shouldn't be too difficult. She'll likely just need to lay low for a couple of weeks and then have a follow-up visit to the cardiologist."

Marin Humane is currently accepting donations to help cover the cost of the $4,000 surgery, which is scheduled for Aug. 17. After she recovers from the surgery, Evita will be available for adoption.
"Evita is a super affectionate dog who simply loves people and will make a great companion," Bloch said. "We were thrilled to learn that a Bay Area veterinarian cardiologist could perform this surgery which will be lifesaving for her."
