Novato SMART Station Secures Additional Funding

The $6 million SMART station is planned between Grant Avenue and De Long Avenue in downtown Novato.

NOVATO, CA – Novato’s downtown Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit station is another step closer to fruition as the project has secured additional funding. The Metropolitan Transportation Commission Wednesday approved an additional $500,000 in funding for the $6 million SMART station between Grant Avenue and De Long Avenue in downtown Novato.

The funding is coming from the Transit Performance Initiative Investment program, which funds capital investments that can improve operations and customer experience on major transit corridors and systems, according to the County of Marin.

"This is an important piece in connecting Novato residents and businesses to SMART," said Supervisor Judy Arnold, who represents Novato and serves on the SMART Board of Directors. "The station will be an economic boost for businesses and a viable transportation alternative to the many residents who live within walking distance of the station."

The first phase of the project, which covered the gauntlet rails, switches, ramps and platform structure, has been completed. The second phase of the project is expected to get underway this fall. According to the county, work will include electrical and system controls and the final platform improvements.

According to the county, the $500,000 MTC grant will completely fund the third phase, which will encompass site improvements, including pick-up and drop-off, parking, lighting and landscaping. Construction on the third phase is expected mid to late 2018.

"We appreciate the partnership between the City of Novato, MTC and SMART to get this project completed," Novato Mayor Denise Athas said. "It is a win-win for our community, the environment, and our economy."

The City of Novato will continue to seek grant funding opportunities throughout the life of the project to offset city expenditures.
