San Marin High School Journalism Students Win Western Region Scholastic Writing Awards

San Marin High School Journalism students Lauren Bollinger, Chloe Chen, Natalie Dybeck, Lauren O’Brien, and Therese Cullen won awards in the 2014 Western Region Scholastic Arts & Writing Contest, competing against high school students throughout the Western United States.

Lauren Bollinger won a Silver Key for her Journalism portfolio, a Gold Key for her personal essay, and an Honorable Mention for her Editorial “We Do Not Live in a Post-Racial Age.”

Chloe Chen won a Gold Key for her personal essay and a Silver Key for her article “San Marin Shifts Its Views Toward the LGBT Community.”

Natalie Dybeck won a Silver Key for her article on Global Glimpse and another Silver Key for her article on Amigos De Las Americas.

Lauren O’Brien won a Silver Key for her article “What’s Up?  The Spiritual Spectrum of San Marin.”

Therese Cullen, who entered in the poetry category, won an Honorable Mention for her poem entitled “Dad.”

Gold Key winners Bollinger and Chen will now be entered in the National Awards competition.

Dating back to 1923, the Awards have become the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., and the nation’s largest source of scholarships for creative young artists and writers. A noteworthy roster of past winners includes Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King, John Updike, and many more.
