Morning, Oceanside-Camp Pendleton! It's Saturday, so let's get you started with everything you need to know going on around town today.


First, today's weather:

Oceanside Chamber presents Operation Appreciation at the Oceanside Pier Amphitheater on May 21! A day of fun and recognition for all active-duty military and their families as they are treated to a day of free food, entertainment and a fun zone for kids. This event is open to the public, with food and fun zone tickets available for purchase. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. More info


Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. Camp Pendleton Fire Department reports that at 11:19 a.m. on Friday a vegetation fire was reported in the Quebec Impact Area. Camp Pendleton Fire is currently on scene and monitoring. Smoke is visible but there is no threat to personnel or structures at this time. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  2. The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will conduct its annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive this Saturday, May 14. Customers simply leave their donations of non-perishable food items next to their mailbox on Saturday, May 14. Letter carriers will collect these food donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes, and distribute them to local food banks, pantries, shelters and churches.   3. An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.5 rattled parts of Riverside and San Diego counties Friday morning. The quake was reported at 6:32 a.m. less than two miles from Palomar Observatory, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The observatory is located on Palomar Mountain northeast of Escondido. The quake had a depth of nearly 5 miles, according to the USGS. (San Diego Patch)
  4. A Carlsbad man pleaded guilty Friday to assaulting multiple police officers during the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. James Burton McGrew, 40, admitted to joining in a mob of people who overtook police officers guarding the Capitol, then later attacking officers during a series of altercations. He is set to be sentenced in August, when he faces a maximum of eight years in prison for his plea to a count of assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers. (Carlsbad Patch)
  5. Hundreds of Laguna Niguel residents were allowed to return to their homes on Friday, as firefighters made strides against the Coastal fire that destroyed 20 multi-million-dollar houses and damaged 11 others. Evacuation orders remained in place for 131 homes, down from 900, the Orange County Fire Authority announced on Friday afternoon. Homes on streets at the core of the destruction – on Coronado Pointe, Vista Court, La Vue, La Fleur, Le Port and Via La Rosas – remained off limits. No new containment figure was announced as of 4 p.m., but on Friday morning, containment of the 200-acre blaze, now in its third day, had reached 25%. (OCRegister)
