It's that time again, what time you say? The time for another review.
This review is on Las Olas in Carlsbad, a Mexican restaurant. http://www.lasolasmex.com/
Since they do have have 2 other restaurant locations (Cardiff-by-the-Sea and Point Loma), I want to make sure you know this review was for the location in Carlsbad. The restaurant is mostly a taco, burrito type of place and not big on combination plates not involving tacos. You won't find a plate of carne asada or pollo asada not in a taco, or special dishes like chile verde not in a taco, but if you do want something close, then order the build your own taco platters and with this everything is on the side, so it's the closest you get to a taco-less platter.
We went here on the spur of the moment after always driving by and seeing this restaurant, we have also driven by the location in Cardiff-by-the-Sea as well, but it was a Friday night and since there were no reservations, the Carlsbad location had less of a wait.
We entered the restaurant and the staff was friendly. We were actually seated quite fast. Our waiter was quick at approaching us and was very friendly. We ordered our beverages and a side of guacamole for the chips we were served. The chips were warm and fresh tasting. We also ordered the Calamari Fritas. The guacamole came out and was good and seasoned well, definitely went great with the chips and salsa. then the Calamari Fritas came out and they were tasty as well, not a lot of oil and basic season which made them taste great.
We ordered our entrees, 1st entree was the char-broiled carne asada build your own taco platter and the 2nd entree was the grilled shrimp build your own taco platter, each of these platters come with salsa fresca, guacamole, cilantro, cabbage, wheat, flour or corn tortillas and you get to choose two of three sides: Cabbage salad, rice or beans. We chose the rice and beans and then double rice for the other. The carne asada was very tasty and seasoned. I used the tortillas separately instead of making tacos, the carne asada came with caramelized onions which were to die for. The rice and beans were good too. The shrimp was also very tasty and seasoned well. They do give you a hearty plate of food. On this visit we did not order a dessert, but they do have a caramel cheesecake flan and a sundae you can order. If you want a Mexican restaurant that takes tacos and burritos to the next level, then time to visit Las Olas. As for prices this is about a $$ on the $$$$ scale.
