Here are the top stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- A Camp Pendleton recruit died during training last month. "18-year-old Marine recruit, Private First Class Javier F. Pong collapsed during training at Camp Pendleton and later died at the Marine Corps base hospital," officials said. "Pong was pronounced dead on Sept. 27 at the hospital," USMC Capt. Joshua D. Collins said. "While engaged in scheduled training, Pong became unconscious and unresponsive," Collins said in a news release late Saturday. "We are greatly saddened by the untimely passing of Pfc. Javier Pong as he pursued his journey to become a United States Marine," said Brig. Gen. Jason L. Morris, commanding general, Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. Pong was born in Las Cruces, N.M., according to an online obituary. (Patch)
- Oceanside made the list of "10 U.S. Cities That Will Make You Think You're On a Tropical Island." "Known as the hub of Southern California, this seaside oasis is conveniently located right in between San Diego and Los Angeles, meaning you can easily make a day trip to either city. Plus, it's teeming with recreational activities, picturesque palm-dotted beaches, and a multitude of stunning golf courses. Anna Krizova, a travel expert at Camino Adventures, recommends visiting the California Surf Museum and the Oceanside Museum of Art. Or, biking the San Luis Rey River trail, taking surf lessons from a local shop, or renting a boat to go deep sea diving. 'Don't miss the Oceanside Sunset Market on Thursdays,' adds Krizova. 'It combines a street fair, a farmers market, an entertainment venue, and a fun family event.' " (Yahoo Life)
- Gas prices in Oceanside continue to decrease below the average in the county. "The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County dropped Monday for the fifth consecutive day after rising to a record, decreasing eight-tenths of a cent to $6.338. ...The dropping prices are the result of refineries that were undergoing maintenance 'coming back online, winter-blend fuel, which is cheaper to produce' entering 'the market sooner than Nov. 1 and multiple cargoes carrying gasoline products are on their way to California in the coming weeks,' Doug Shupe, the Automobile Club of Southern California's corporate communications manager, told City News Service." In Oceanside, gas prices can be found for as low as $5.85 per gallon, according to Gas Buddy. (Patch)
- Oceanside approves a new security plan for the harbor. "The Oceanside City Council unanimously approved a plan Wednesday to replace police officers with lifeguards for public safety services such as boat rescues, fire suppression, dock inspections and more. The city’s police and fire departments have been working with harbor officials and users for two years to develop the plan, in part a response to complaints that police resources too often are drawn away for incidents in other parts of the city, slowing response times and leaving assets unprotected at the harbor. Full implementation of the Fire Department-led plan is scheduled for early 2023, and a savings of $240,000 annually is expected in the cost the harbor district pays the city for public safety services, Fire Chief David Parsons said at Wednesday’s City Council meeting."
