Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- Oceanside Police have arrested a suspect in the hit-and-run death of 68-year-old Oceanside resident Cecilia Shu. A 34-year-old Oceanside man, Sean Richter, was taken into custody at the Oceanside Police Department on suspicion of felony gross vehicular manslaughter and hit and run with death. Shu was walking on a sidewalk alongside Benet Road near Leepish Drive shortly before 8:30 a.m. on June 5 when an eastbound Honda HR-V veered off the roadway and struck her. Investigators recovered the suspect’s vehicle after weeks of canvassing the neighborhood surrounding the accident site and vehicle collision centers. (Patch)
- Carlsbad Police have confirmed that a jawbone found in a creek earlier this month was, in fact, human. Jodee Reyes, a spokeswoman for the Carlsbad Police Department, told NBC 7 that the county medical examiner's office had informed CPD that it's believed the mandible is "from possibly a white or Hispanic adult male." It's also thought that the jawbone had been "in the elements" for about two years. Investigators have been researching missing person databases in an effort to help with identification, Reyes added. A man fishing and digging for shells at El Salto Falls on July 3 made the grisly discovery. An Oceanside officer responded first and passed the report on to CPD. (NBC San Diego)
- A man was sentenced to 40 years-to-life for the fatal stabbing of a Camp Pendleton Marine during a 2017 Gaslamp Quarter brawl. Jose Oscar Esqueda, 41, was convicted of first-degree murder for the death of 21-year-old Ryan Harris, who was stabbed in the throat on Dec. 29, 2017. Another Marine, Andrew Haulman, suffered stab wounds to his chest and back during the altercation with Esqueda, but survived his injuries. (CBS News 8)
- San Diego County Crime Log: A look at some of this week's police, fire and courtroom stories from across the county. Crews halted the Casner Fire near Ramona at 180 acres. Border Patrol agents found 18 pounds of meth hidden in a vehicle's undercarriage. A 16-year-old girl was sexually assaulted while walking in the community of Lincoln Acres. Three men were shot and wounded on the front lawn of a home in the Ridgeview/Webster neighborhood. (Patch)
- The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County dropped Thursday for the 43rd consecutive day since rising to a record, decreasing 2.5 cents to $5.622, its lowest amount since March 9. The average price has decreased 75.1 cents during the streak, according to figures from AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. The average price is 16.5 cents less than one week ago and 64.4 cents lower than one month ago, but $1.292 more than one year ago. The average in Oceanside has decreased even more with prices as low as $5.05 per gallon, according to GasBuddy. (San Diego Patch)
