Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- The City of Oceanside announced the appointment of David Parsons as Oceanside's next fire chief. The appointment will be effective July 30 when current Fire Chief Rick Robinson is scheduled to retire. The Oceanside Fire Department is the third-largest department in San Diego County and as an all-risk agency, responds to any and all emergency situations. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
- Oceanside's Annual Independence Parade is back Saturday after a two-year hiatus. MainStreet Oceanside is seeking extra help for the day of the parade. A volunteer orientation meeting is tonight at 6 p.m. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
- Rep. Mike Levin recently co-sponsored legislation meant to protect estuaries and waterways like the San Mateo Creek, which partially runs through Camp Pendleton and San Onofre State Beach, emptying into the ocean just south of San Clemente. The legislation would reauthorize funding for the Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program at $60 million per year. (San Clemente Times)
- Oceanside Police Department is launching a new Community Service Officers program. The department seeks to hire 30 Community Service Officers for a new program designed to assist police on lower-priority service calls. This allows police to remain available to answer emergency calls and have more time for proactive enforcement while providing the CSO valuable experience that will help to prepare them for a plethora of public service roles. - An Oceanside runner is among the U.S. Association of Blind Athletes' 2022 sports ambassadors, the organization recently announced. Among the five runners selected for the USABA Endurance Sport Ambassador Team is Vietnam War veteran Ramiro Contreras of Oceanside. "I love being outside and have a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment after a run," Contreras stated on USABA's website. "It is amazing that my body is still letting me do it at 76. Running has been a great way to meet so many wonderful people and the camaraderie among the visually impaired and blind running community is unbelievable." (OsideNews)
