Going to Extremes: From the Palisades Coast to Kenya
Dust, drought and electrical shortages can't stop my wonder and awe at this new adventure in Kenya.

Well I'm finally here in Loitokitok, Kenya! Funny that my first blog post from here comes on the heels of Patch.com headlines about Pacific Palisades as the most expensive housing in the country and Sugar Ray's new book. I knew when I left in early June that I would be going from one extreme to other, but I couldn't know then just how big it would be.
Loitokitok is an impossibly dusty, drought-wrought but still captivating town at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro. I've found a great internet "cave" as they call them here, but sometimes it's closed or the electricity is out. So please bear with me as my posts will be sporadic for a while.
I've already written about my previous trips to Africa, as well as my apprehension about returning to this incredible continent now, 10 years later. Fact is I'm also 10 years older, and both Africa and I are, well, slightly more worn. Political upheaval, climate change, and the worldwide financial downturn have taken their toll here. But Africa still has it as far as I'm concerned, and more.

Because as extreme a change in circumstances, she still presents a great new teaching and learning experience for anyone who's game. And I'm happy to be her student - in Peace Corps small business training, Kiswahili lessons and the many new adventures I'll be having here. So please stay tuned.
