The most famous statue ever created of Aphrodite was carved in the 4th Century B.C. by the Athenian sculptor Praxiteles, who is credited as the first artist to fashion the Greek goddess nude. Classicist Andrew Stewart explores the diverse legends of this lost masterpiece, the many messages it conveyed, and its reception from the Renaissance to the present.
