Family of Missing UCLA Student Thanks Community for Support

The outpouring of volunteers continues to grow as the enters its third week. A Facebook community of 2,569 "likes" as of Tuesday has rallied around the Goeser family.

A YouTube video of a tearful interview with David's sister Jessica was posted over the weekend.

Mark Goeser, David's father, told Patch on Monday night the family is very grateful for the dozens from Southern California to reconduct a search on the trails and canyon near Los Liones Drive, where his son's white 2001 Toyota Corolla was found parked in late July. The latest local search was conducted in cooperation with Team Amber, a California search and rescue organization.

Mark Goeser said law enforcement also helped comb the area again with dogs but did not acquire any new information to David's whereabouts.

"But if you sweep through every area, it tells you where he’s not, which told us all the evidence," Goeser said. He said the solidarity of Team Amber, a community of people who've been touched by crisis and the tragedy of missing persons, was touching.

Search extended into Mexico

Mr. Goeser said Monday they have reached into Mexico, talking to law enforcement, hospitals and jails to see if anyone had contact with his son.

"We [have] people contacting us from Boston, Idaho, Montana, Missouri and Texas," Goeser said, noting connections have been made across the country, and even overseas, by those following the search.

He added they haven't dropped the idea David could have gone to Canada, either.

Financing the search

The expenses of the search continue to increase for the Goeser family, and ther Facebook page makes a donation link available to those wanting to help.

"We're just a couple of average parents," Mark Goeser said. "We're doing everything we can. It's just been a slow process. We’re inviting people who are asking, 'How can we contribute to the cause?' We’re very grateful."

Concerns over David's depression

"We want people to understand that David was not just some loner who fell off the grid," Mark Goeser said. "He's been very social and connected through sports, theater, film, music and his passion for writing. He’s the kid who has dreams and ambitions like the rest of us. He's loved by tons of people."

Mark Goeser said people who know David recognize that his disappearance is out of character, Mark Goeser added. However, in the last year, Mark Goeser said his son struggled with depression but had progressed over the last seven months in treatment.

"It caught us by surprise," Mr. Goeser said of the disappearence. "We had been trying to monitor the case as close as possible. He was working right up till the end."
