Spikers Seeded No. 2 for City Section Playoffs

The Palisades High boys' volleyball team is second in Division I behind Granada Hills.

The City Section boys' volleyball playoff seedings were determined Tuesday night and Palisades High has been awarded the No. 2 seed in Division I. The Dolphins have a bye in Thursday's first round of the 24-team, single-elimination tournament.

The Western League champion Dolphins (21-5-2 overall, 12-0 in league) will host the winner between No. 15 Granada Hills Kennedy and No. 18 Chatsworth in the second round Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Palihi. No other Western League teams are in the Division I draw.

West Valley League champion Granada Hills is the No. 1 seed and also has a first-round bye. Also receiving byes in the first round are No. 3 Sun Valley Poly, No. 4 Narbonne, No. 5 Birmingham, No. 6 Taft, No. 7 Carson and No. 8 Sylmar.

Granada Hills (17-3, 10-0) is undefeated against City Section opponents and beat Palisades, 25-20, 25-12, 25-27, 25-18, in a nonleague match March 7 at Palisades. Neither the Highlanders nor the Dolphins dropped a set in league play.  

Palisades lost to eventual-champion Granada Hills in the semifinals in 2009 and fell to Taft in a five-set thriller, 25-23, 18-25, 25-12, 18-25, 17-15, in the finals last spring.

The quarterfinals are next Thursday at 7 p.m., the semifinals are May 17 at 7 p.m. and the final is Saturday, May 21, at 5 p.m. at Roybal Learning Center.

Verdugo Hills is the No. 1 seed in Division II, followed by LA Jordan, Eagle Rock and Bravo Medical. Four Western League schools made the 16-team draw. LA  University is No. 6, Fairfax is No. 8, Venice is No. 10 and is No. 12. 

Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies, which finished sixth out of seven teams in the Western League, is seeded No. 6 in the Small Schools Division.
