Artists Reimagine 'Americana' Ahead Of 250th Anniversary In Sonoma County
Local artists transform iconic American symbols into fresh, modern perspectives in a juried exhibition.
PETALUMA, CA — “Americana” is often tied to American life and culture, from small-town streets and crafts to popular images and design trends. Americana encompasses the tangible and intangible threads of American life.
As the nation approaches its 250th birthday, the Petaluma Arts Center is inviting artists to turn familiar symbols and stories into fresh expressions for a divided and changing world, aiming to examine and redefine what Americana means today through contemporary art.
The center invited Bay Area artists to reinterpret and reimagine Americana for the juried exhibition.Iconic imagery and symbols — such as the U.S. flag, diners, farmers, and neon— help define the nation’s visual identity, while music blends roots traditions into a distinct American soundtrack.

Americana helps knit the country together with iconic imagery and symbols — from the U.S. flag to lonely diners, austere farmers, and neon.
For some, they evoke core values and ideals. For others, Americana tells a different story with symbols that simultaneously erase, oppress, and ignore people and entire parts of the continent.

Now especially, Americana is open to interpretation. For the upcoming exhibition “Americana Reimagined,” artists will interpret the nation’s visual language and cultural history.
Rather than celebrating nostalgia, the exhibition asks artists to interrogate what Americana means, encompassing iconography and crafts, as well as design, music, and literature.
On Thursday, March 12, the Petaluma Arts Center opens “Americana Reimagined” with a reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., inviting artists and the public to explore new interpretations of the visual language of Americana.
The exhibition runs through April 18 and invites artists to move beyond nostalgia, examining how symbols and stories shift over time. Artists can mix old and new symbols, rework motifs, and question their meaning today.
On March 12, in conjunction with the opening, Inverness-Point Reyes artist Inez Storer will present “States of Anxiety, States of Hope.” This selection combines her personal artifacts and cultural symbols.
The work reflects contemporary social and emotional challenges. On March 14, local historian Katherine Rinehart will lead a tour of Petaluma’s roadside architecture, showing how adaptive reuse preserves heritage while echoing current trends.
Jurors include Donna Seager, Richard Neill, and Simon Corwin. Together, the exhibitions transform Petaluma into a space where art revisits the past, confronts the present, and imagines new ways to understand Americana.
