Washed-Out Section Of Hwy 1 Opens Ahead Of Schedule, Thanks To Santa Rosa Company

A portion of state Highway 1 in Marin County that was closed in both directions since last month because of heavy rains reopened this morning ahead of schedule, a Caltrans spokesman said.

Highway 1 was closed on Dec. 11 after the soil beneath the road between Panoramic Highway and Muir Woods Road washed away but the road pavement remained intact, Caltrans spokesman Bob Haus said.

Highway 1 was expected to be closed until March or late February at best, but Santa Rosa-based Ghilotti Construction Co. crews worked 16 hours a day, seven days a week to finish the $1 million project ahead of schedule, Haus said.

Crews built a wall by drilling holes in the ground, sinking steel girders, embedding them in concrete and installing lateral wood timbers, Haus said.

The soil “slip-out” occurred about 4 miles north of the Highway 1 and U.S. Highway 101 junction. The length of the road repair was 109 feet, according to Haus.
