Globally, cigarette butts are the most commonly discarded type of waste and an estimated 1.69 billion pounds of them wind up as toxic trash each year. Contrary to popular belief, cigarette butts are not biodegradable, and environmental and health groups recognize the seriousness of the problem, from bio-accumulation of poisons up the food chain, to damage to commercial fisheries and water supplies.
