Pleasanton Mourns Loss Of Rising Loafer, Owner Mary Costello
For more than 20 years, the Rising Loafer and Mary Costello served Pleasanton.
PLEASANTON, CA — An institution has been lost in Pleasanton. The Rising Loafer Cafe & Bakery at 428 Main Street closed Aug. 15 after its owner, Mary Costello, died at home unexpectedly. She was 54. Her cause of death has not been made public.
Opened in 1996, the Rising Loafer was known for its hearty breakfast and lunch menu. Costello started at the restaurant the same year it began, and she purchased it in 2003 after the then-owner decided to sell, according to a Sept. 21, 2017 radio interview she did with KGO's Brian Copeland.
The Rising Loafer was open seven days a week, serving dishes and baked goods made from only fresh ingredients. Martin Gates was a longtime customer. He, along with his wife and kids, frequented the eatery most Sundays. He ordered omelettes, his wife favored pancakes or French toast.

The family loved the place so much that Gates recommended Copeland feature the restaurant and its owner on the KGO show, "Hole in the Wall." The radio segment features small businesses recommended by patrons.
Costello's passing was quiet, but her impact on the local community was not. A sign posted in the Rising Loafer window after her death read:
