Rick loves the opportunity for a lot of camping and the summer adventures with his friends. His scouting journey started by joining the Cub Scouts in first grade. In Troop 998, he has gained new skills and confidence while earning 38 merit badges, camping over 100 nights and developing as a leader serving his troop and patrol. He has helped, planned and given leadership to multiple service projects benefiting his pack, troop, school, parish and community over the past 10 years. His parents were able to assist and watch him grow, helping others and achieving his goals.

For Rick’s Eagle Scout service project, he built two potting storage work benches for Assumption School’s Sustainable Classroom as well as signage throughout the learning garden and school animal enclosures. The work benches were designed for different age groups; one shorter for PreK-4th grade and a taller one for 5th-8th grade. He raised $2,155.00 for project materials and received additional material discounts and donations from businesses. He managed 35 volunteers who gave a combined 239 hours of service to his project.

Rick’s Scouting experience goes far deeper than one big project, it has also helped him discover an area of study for college. While working on his Archaeology Merit Badge he decided to apply for an internship at Colonial Williamsburg’s Public Archaeology Institute and had the opportunity to work on an actual archaeological dig at Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. This has deepened his love of history, specifically US History, and has led him to return to Williamsburg this summer for a pre-college program in history at the College of William & Mary.

To earn the rank of Eagle Scout, a Scout must be active in their troop, provide leadership, earn 21 merit badges including the areas of citizenship, camping, communications, cooking and lifesaving or emergency preparedness as well as demonstrate that they live by the principles of the Scout Oath and the Scout Law. They must also plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project benefiting a religious institution, school, or community group.
