Teen's Fundraiser Will Give Hygiene Products To Homeless Women

"I felt that no one should have to choose between a meal or the hygiene products that they need."

PLEASANTON, CA — A middle school student in Pleasanton recently launched an online fundraiser to help raise money to pay for feminine hygiene products for homeless women. Audrey Combs, a seventh grader at Thomas Hart Middle School, said the donation drive was created after her teacher assigned her class a project called “Twenty Percent Time Project.”

“Our project must have a purpose and benefit or educate others,” Combs told Patch.

Combs said some students wrote a book, learned how to make a dress, composed music but said she was inspired to help homeless women who do not have access to feminine hygiene products.

“I felt that no one should have to choose between a meal or the hygiene products that they need,” Combs said.

Combs said students are given 20 percent of the week in the class to work on their projects. Combs decided to create a GoFundMe page, which has garnered $85 since it was launched. Her goal is to raise $1,000, according to the page. Click here to donate.

“The reason why I wanted to do this project is because I have noticed the growing problem of period poverty where women don’t have access to feminine hygiene products,” Combs said. “I really want to make the world a little better and I know I can’t solve all the problems in the world but I want to show kindness and make others happy.”

Combs said she intends to donate hygiene products to Fesco, a homeless shelter in Hayward, and to the Huckleberry House, which is a crisis shelter for youth in San Francisco.
