Rancho Santa Margarita Flag Day Celebrated With Honor

Residents view patriotism in practice Rancho Santa Margarita on Wednesday, June 14 at the 6:30 p.m. Flag Day, prior to city council meeting.

RANCHO SANTA MARAGARITA, CA β€” Flag day in Rancho Santa Margarita is a community tradition filled with patriotic music and inspirational talks. Held in conjunction with the American Legion Post 862, residents were invite to listen to music, hear commentary by current and former members of the armed forces, city officials and to properly dispose of American flags in a ceremonial way.

On Wednesday at 6:15 p.m., the lawn behind City Hall filled with lawn chairs. Residents were invited to bring worn out or damaged US flags in need of disposal.

"This is an opportunity to honor the American Flag in partnership with American Legion Post 862 and many local Boy and Girl Scout units," the city said.

The ceremony is held to destroy properly – by burning – worn, damaged or otherwise un-serviceable American Flags in a dignified manner in accordance with The United States Flag Code which reads:

"As a revered symbol of freedom and justice, the flag of the United States of America needs to be treated with the utmost respect. This respect extends to the flag’s eventual retirement and destruction."

Flags can be disposed of throughout the year in the flag box receptacle located in the lobby of the Bell Tower Regional Community Center to be included in the retirement ceremony.
