CHP Shooting Shuts Down 405 For Hours In South Bay
An investigation into a fire at a homeless encampment along the freeway Thursday escalated to an officer-involved shooting, CHP said.
HAWTHORNE, CA — All traffic on Interstate 405 was shut down for about eight hours Thursday night in Hawthorne after a confrontation between California Highway Patrol officers and a man escalated into a shooting, authorities said Friday.
According to the CHP, officers responded to a report of a brush fire on the side of the freeway before 7:30 p.m. When officers arrived they discovered a fire at a homeless encampment along a freeway embankment, authorities said in a statement.
CHP officers alleged a man at the scene there bricks in their direction, prompting officers to shoot at the suspect, according to a report from CBS Los Angeles.

"While the officer on scene investigated matters pertaining to the fire, he was approached by a combative male adult subject, resulting in an officer-involved shooting," according to the CHP statement. "Immediately following the shooting, the officer rendered medical aid to the suspect until relieved by Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics."
The CHP issued a SigAlert for the freeway closure near the Rosecrans Avenue on-ramp just after 7 p.m. that was lifted after 3 a.m. on Friday.

The wounded man was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries described as not life-threatening, the CHP reported. The officer was not hurt.
