In the midst of this fall season, it's hard not to think of the colors changing and the beauty of a full harvest. With the turning of the trees and the smell of fresh baked pie, every year I'm reminded of Jesus' words in Matthew chapter 9: "The Harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest."
Several years ago a question circling around church conferences and water-coolers was: IF YOUR CHURCH CLOSED - WOULD ANYONE NOTICE?!?
It is a difficult question.
In all honesty it’s a question we want to immediately respond with a strong and resounding “OF COURSE!”
But really, in the busy world we live in, if a church over here and a church over there closed – would the neighbors notice? Would they care? Would there be a blip on anyone’s radar?
I consider myself pretty well connected. In the two+ years we've been here, I've gotten to know a lot of pastors in the area. And I have a good idea what’s going on along the beaches. Yet in July, a neighboring church in Redondo Beach, after 103 years closed its doors.
I have to admit, I didn't know much about the church. I had never met the pastor. I only knew of the church because of driving down PCH. And yet their closing caught me off guard as I read about it on the Redondo Beach Patch.
The closing of this neighboring church begs us to ask this question: IF BEACH CITIES CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP CLOSED - WOULD ANYONE NOTICE?!?
Throughout this season, May We Never Tire of doing what is good, because in His season, we shall bring in a great harvest. (Galatians 6:9) Together, God is calling us forward, out into the fields. May we be his blessed laborers who step into his harvest! Together with Isaiah may we always proclaim: Here I am, send me!
