Mixed-Use Developments Are A Temporary No Go
The moratorium against mixed-use developments will last for 45 days. Council members may vote to extend it at their Sept. 19 meeting.

REDONDO BEACH, CA – The Redondo Beach City Council voted 5-0 for a temporary moratorium against mixed-use zoning density Tuesday. Mayor Bill Brand first started pushing towards a mixed-use zoning ban in 2004 and 20055, according to The Beach Reporter, but he was always met with a 4-1 vote.
On Tuesday, the council passed an ordinance that suspends approval of any new mixed-use development, excluding the commercial residential zone that encompasses the South Bay Galleria, for now. The measure wouldn't apply to already approved projects.
The moratorium will last for 45 days, and earned a standing ovation from activists who have been fighting against mix-use development in order to maintain their neighborhoods, the Daily Breeze reported. There will be another vote for an up to two year-extension to the moratorium at the September 19 City Council meeting – there, Council members will have to argue for why mixed-use projects pose an “immediate threat” to public health, safety and welfare, according to the Daily Breeze.
