BASEBALL: Rosado Leads Sequoia Past Terra Nova

Spot starter hurls complete-game 5-hitter in 7-1 road win; Cherokees improve to 3-4 in PAL Bay.

The Score: Sequoia 7, Terra Nova 1.

The Star: Roman Rosado took the mound for Sequoia High as a spot starter, but the junior pitched like the ace of the staff, tossing a complete-game five-hitter to top host Terra Nova in a Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division game Wednesday afternoon. “We need to conserve our bullpen when we play tougher teams,” said Rosado, who improved to 3-0. Rosado’s lone blemish was Nick Manessis’ inside-the-park home run in the first. Rosado also went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and an RBI.

The Turning Point: Trailing 1-0 in the second, Sequoia (6-8-2, 3-4 PAL Bay) put together a two-run rally when Dalton Diaz and Rosado hit back-to-back singles to open the frame. After the pair advanced a base on a sacrifice, Diaz scored on a balk by starter Bobby Seghal. Then Jake Mauldin tripled to plate Rosado, the eventual winning run.

The Quote: “He’s not one of our first or second pitchers. Our ace had a sore shoulder, so Roman stepped up and threw one hell of a game. This is probably the best game we’ve had from a starting pitcher all season. Opportunities are precious, especially for guys who don’t find themselves in the lineup too much, and Roman stepped into a hole today and picked the rest of the team up.” -- Sequoia coach Corey Uhalde, on the ace-like effort from Rosado.

What’s Next? Terra Nova (7-5-1, 1-2) and Sequoia go back at it again today at 3:15 p.m. in Redwood City.

The Bottom Line: The Sequoia seniors, a class on the rise when the Cherokees went from a 6-22 in 2009 to 16-9 in 2010 (earning a promotion to the PAL Bay), now look to capitalize on one last season. Starting seniors Matt Eastman, Nick Brown and Clint Kastrop lead the charge. Now 3-4 in the PAL’s upper division, Sequoia is holding its own.

Smathers last went hitless when Manessis threw a perfect game against Crystal Springs Uplands on St. Patrick’s Day. ... Sequoia is unranked this week in , while Terra Nova is No. 8.
