Coroner IDs Man Shot By Redwood City Police

BREAKING: Police say the man was fatally shot after he displayed some bizarre behavior in front of a local bank.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — A man who was shot and killed by Redwood City police after he allegedly fired at officers has been identified by the San Mateo County Coroner's office. He was 31-year-old Marco Antionio Carlos.

According to police, Carlos was pacing back and forth in front of ATM machines at the Wells Fargo Bank on Broadway in Redwood City on Saturday afternoon. A person called 911 to report him, as they spotted a handgun in his hands.

Redwood City police said they responded to the scene and "immediately recognized the male from multiple previous police contacts." They set up a perimeter to protect bystanders and keep Carlos from leaving the scene, then tried to de-escalate the situation in an attempt to have him surrender peacefully.

"As additional resources arrived, officers began deploying less lethal weapons as an alternative means of engagement, however, before those resources could be utilized, the suspect, without warning, took a combative stance, raised his gun, and fired an unspecified number of shots in the direction of the officers," police said in a news release.

"Officers immediately responded with lethal force and the male was incapacitated," the agency said.
