Man Hit, Killed On Peninsula Highway: CHP

BREAKING: California Highway Patrol officers say it appears the man was walking when he was struck by a vehicle.

SAN MATEO, CA — A man suffered fatal injuries when he was hit by a vehicle along a Peninsula highway late Wednesday, the California Highway Patrol reports. It appears the man — whose identity was initially unknown, prompting a call for public help — was walking next to State Route 92 near El Camino Real in San Mateo when he was struck, according to officials.

The crash was reported around 10:10 p.m. and temporarily blocked all westbound traffic. The pedestrian was hit by an SUV, the CHP reports.

The man was wearing a Stanford hat when he was hit, according to the CHP. On Thursday morning, officials had asked for the public's help in identifying him, but by 11 a.m. officers told Patch they'd positively ID'd him. His identity wasn't being publicly released yet, as family members still needed to be notified.
