Redwood City Taxi Driver Arrested In Deadly Hit-And-Run, CHP Says [UPDATE]

BREAKING: California Highway Patrol officials are reporting a deadly crash in the Redwood City area Monday morning.

UPDATE 12:45 P.M. -- A taxi driver has been arrested after fleeing the scene of a deadly collision with a pedestrian in unincorporated San Mateo County near Redwood City early Monday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol. Simon Gonzalez was arrested after the collision reported at about 2:25 a.m. at 2490 Middlefield Road near Redwood City.

CHP officials say that a man was walking across the road, from west to east, just south of Flynn Avenue when he was struck by a person in a taxi.

"Simultaneously, a Ford Crown Victoria Taxi was heading southbound on Middlefield Road and fled the scene without stopping as required by law," the CHP said in a news release. "The vehicle struck the pedestrian."

The pedestrian was taken to Stanford Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released, but he was identified as a transient.

Officers were eventually able to locate the suspect vehicle, a 2005 Ford Crown Victoria, and arrested Gonzalez at his home in Redwood City, according to the CHP.

REDWOOD CITY, CA -- A person was killed in Redwood City early Monday morning as they were hit by a vehicle while walking in town, the California Highway Patrol reports. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. in the area of Middlefield and Woodside roads.

The pedestrian was taken to Stanford Hospital where they were pronounced deceased, CHP officials said. The identity of the victim was not released. No other injuries were reported.
